Why I am interested in this puzzle
We are trying to find the proverbial needle in a hay stack. YDNA proves that Peter Saylor (1794 in PA - 1842 in Upper Canada) is a descendant of Ulrich Seiler Sr who died in 1740 in Lancaster Co., PA. Ulrich was a "Palatine" who arrived on the ship Catherine at Philadelphia in 1738 along with sons Hans and Ulrich Jr. Most of what is known involves the son, Ulrich Jr. We are trying to place "Peter Saylor of Upper Canada" in this family and will keep plugging away at it.

Thanks to Ted Smith and John Saylor for being partners in this search.

1. OVERVIEW
Two men with the surname Saylor had a 36/37 match on their YDNA tests. One was a descendant of Ulrich Seiler and lives in the US and the other is a Canadian descendant of Peter Saylor, b. 1794, and living near Niagara Falls. Their common ancestor is Ulrich Seiler. See the results in group 9 on the Saylor Y DNA Project.

A major source of research done about Ulrich Seiler and his descendants is Ulrich Seiler Descendants compiled by Samuel J. Saylor of Dallastown, York Co., PA in 1989. Samuel was a descendant through Ulrich Jr. The puzzle is to place Peter Saylor into this lineage. This book will be abbreviated in citations as USD.

What can we learn from the ship Catherine?
No ship passenger list survived but the two nominal lists of oaths did. From this we learn the ship came from London to Philadelphia with 8 other male passengers that took the oaths. They are said to be "Palatines" and though this refers to a region along the Rhine it also can be seen as generic for German. At the time, people living up the Rhine as far as Switzerland and lower in the Palatine came down the river to Rotterdam and made their way to America either directly from there or London, Dover or even Portsmouth. We have no way at this time of knowing where these folks came from. They may not have come from the same part of the Rhine valley as they may have met in London and paid to come on the same boat. Let us accept that they are from the Palatine region and arrived in Philadelphia in July 1738.

Looking at other ship lists of similar boats arriving in Philadelphia almost all names on the lists are those of men. So it is probable that women were part of the passengers but not listed. Perhaps the wife of Ulrick Sr made the trip. There is no proof that Hans and Ulrich Jr are sons but it seems most likely. We will assume this to be true.

Where did they first settle?
Like many Rhinelanders they settled in Lancaster County, PA. Ulrich Seiler Sr is probably the same man as Ulrich Seeler who died intestate in Lancaster County in 1740 and for whom a Letter of Administration is noted in the index. No wife is known and no burial location is known. If Hans and Ulrich Jr were both young men of say 20 then their father may have been about 45 or older. In 1738 this would give a birth year of about 1693. Let's speculate that Ulrich Seiler Sr was born in the Palatine c1693 and died in Lancaster Co., PA in 1740.

Hans Seiler, son of Ulrich Sr.
Nothing has yet been found by any researcher on son Hans Seiler who could also be John Sailor in the record. Perhaps he died shortly after arrival in America.

Ulrich Seiler Jr, son of Ulrich Sr
Ulrick Seiler Jr would have been born c1718 in the Palatine if he was 20 in 1738 when he arrived in America with his father. Ulrich Jr first settled in Lancaster County, PA. We know this because his second and third children, Mary Elizabeth and Benedict, were baptized in 1745 and 1747 respectively in the First Reformed Church in Lancaster, Lancaster County. No baptism survives for Christian, the first child. If we assume that Christian was born c1743 then Ulrich would have married Mary Catherine Schmid about 1742. Therefore, we have Ulrich Seiler Jr arriving in 1738 and moving to Lancaster with his father and settling there and marrying a few years later. We do not yet know if he owned or rented a farm.

In 1750 at Lancaster, Ulrich marries Elizabeth Guise so his first wife died sometime after the birth of Benedict. The first child of this new couple is Peter who is born in 1753 and baptized in the Christ Lutheran Church in York, York County, PA. Therefore we can conclude that the family moved a few miles west across the Susquehanna River to the adjacent York County. The couple had 6 more children after Peter: Catherine, Casper (b. 1760), Barbara (b. 1763), William (b. 1764), George (b. 1765), Henry (b. 1766) and Ulrich (b. 1771). The child Ulrich is born the same year that his father Ulrich Seiler Jr dies without a will (intestate). His wife Elizabeth gets a Letter of Administration to settle the estate and in 1773 the children are all named in the settlement. By this time Elizabeth had remarried to Henry Graff and they lived in Windsor Tp., York Co.

Ulrich Seiler Jr is described as a linen weaver and as a yeoman in records. No land records for him have been found by this research team.

Where might Peter Saylor of Niagara be found in this mix?
Peter Saylor of Niagara was born in 1794 and via the DNA of a descendant, this Peter must be a child of one of the sons of Ulrich Seiler Jr or possibly from his brother Hans. Peter Saylor of Niagara marries Elizabeth Lapp who comes from Rockingham County, VA. Two of the above children, Henry and Ulrich settle in Rockingham Co. so that is a clue that jumps out. However we must remember that the 1842 census record states that Peter Saylor is from PA and not VA. Therefore, Peter's father would have to be a son of Ulrich Seiler Jr at this point because Hans is a blank slate. Let's take these sons one at a time.

Christian Seiler
Christian is the eldest son, born about 1744 so for him to have a son in 1794 is a bit of a push. At this time we do not know the names of his children.

Benedict Seiler
He is not named in his father's estate proceedings in 1771 and nothing is found about him so it is assumed he died young.

Peter Seiler
He is the eldest child of Ulrich Jr's second marriage and born in 1753. He is a good candidate to have a son Peter and at this time we do not know his children's names.

Casper Seiler
There are two Casper Seilers. One is Casper, son of Ulrich Seiler Jr who is aged 10 in his fathers Orphan Court record and thus born in 1760. An older, second Casper Seiler and his wife Maria Margaret Michel baptize a daughter in 1768.  This older Casper is probably related to Ulrich Jr given the use of the name Casper for his child.

Land records state that a Casper Seiler bought and sold land in Windsor Tp, York Co in Feb 1772. This means the older Casper is in the area and not the same Casper born in 1760.

Some online genealogies have these two Caspers merged into one and being the son of Ulrich Seiler Jr. We do not know the names of any children.

William and John George Seiler
We do not yet know the children of these two men. John George goes by the name George. They are possible candidates to have a son Peter who made his way to the Niagara region of Upper Canada.

Henry and Ulrich Seiler
The two youngest children, Henry and Ulrich, being raised by Henry and Elizabeth Graff settle and marry in Rockingham Co. VA. Did the Graff family move there from York Co., PA? It is a considerable distance south and the reason for the move is not known. Henry and Ulrich would marry around 1790 and according to USD, they married in Rockingham County.

Henry has a son Peter in 1790 who dies in Rush Co., IN in 1873. Ulrich has two daughters that have so far been found. Henry and Ulrich seem to be a strikeout as the father of Peter Saylor of Niagara.

Where does that leave us?
Peter, possibly Casper, William and George seem to be the candidates remaining to be investigated more closely.

Residence
Ulrich lived with his first wife and three children in Lancaster Co, PA. The last child was born in 1747 and Ulrich married his second wife in 1750 in York Co. PA. It would appear that they moved to York County at this time and their first child, Peter, was born in 1753 in York Co. It appears all children born of this second marriage were born in York Co. In 1771, at the death of Ulrich, wife Elizabeth was living in Windsor Tp, York Co. Let's assume this was where the family lived.

This genealogy mixes the two Caspers together
Casper, born 1760; married Maria Margaret Michel, daughter of Paul Michel of Windsor Township; died 1804. The source for this seems to be The History of Chanceford Twp., p. 175. This genealogy mixes the orphan court record with the 1804 probate and probably the author was unaware of the baptism in 1768 of the daughter.
Children
  1. Anna Catharine [this is the child born in 1768 - see above]
  2. Elizabeth
  3. Margaret
  4. John
  5. Peter Seiler, b. 15 Aug 1779, Hagerstown Washington, MD and d. 20 Jun 1852, Hopewell, York, PA
Note: The above Casper Seiler with his wife and children cannot be the son of Ulrich Seiler Jr as he would be 8 when his first child is born.
